What You’ll See On The Ingredient List
Retinol

Why Your Skin Needs It
If you’re looking to reduce fine lines and wrinkles and give your skin a youthful radiance, then retinol should be in your routine. This pure form of vitamin A helps slow down your skin’s natural ageing process, as well as rebuild collagen and elastin, t wo essential structures that help keep your skin smooth and firm. Retinol and other retinoids also accelerate cell turnover, revealing an overall smoother surface and brighter glow.

Benefits Of Retinol
There are many benefits of retinol for the skin. Vitamin A derivatives like retinoid and retinol help kick cell turnover into gear, allowing for fresh, radiant cells to surface, creating a smooth, renewed appearance. This also helps to improve the appearance of lines and wrinkles, while also helping to reduce hyperpigmentation for a more even, radiant complexion. Certain prescription-grade retinols can also help to treat acne and other skin conditions.
The Clinique Expertise
Retinol may cause peeling, redness, or dryness in the first weeks of use – a sign that it’s transforming your skin. At Clinique, we have taken a gentle approach to retinoids, ensuring maximum results with minimal irritation. Whatever your age and skin goals, it’s so important to start with a gentle retinoid formula. Clinique Smart Clinical Repair™ Wrinkle Correcting Serum is a good starting point – this gentle serum is concentrated with advanced anti-ageing technologies, combining a potent 1% retinoid with hyaluronic acid and our CL1870 Peptide Complex™ to visibly repair, resurface and re-plump wrinkles.
How To Apply Retinol To Skin
There are many ways to apply retinol to skin. Our Smart Clinical Repair™ retinoid serum offers a gentle approach to retinoids and is suitable for use morning and night. You can also find retinol and retinoids in moisturisers and eye creams, but a retinoid serum is generally the best option for results. We also offer a more concentrated overnight retinol treatment, Clinique Smart Night™ Clinical MD Multi-Dimensional Repair Treatment Retinol.
Do’s and Don’ts of Applying Retinol
• Do make sure you’re wearing SPF 50 every day, as retinol and other retinoids can make skin more sensitive to UV damage. Also, there’s little point in trying to target signs of ageing with a retinoid, if you are not protecting against the sun – one of the leading causes of premature ageing.
• Don’t skip moisturiser. Even though serums like Smart Clinical Repair™ Wrinkle Correcting Serum contain hydrating ingredients, it’s important to follow your retinol product with a nourishing, hydrating moisturiser to help prevent dryness.
• Don’t use retinol with other actives. If you have sensitive skin, using too many active ingredients, such as retinol and exfoliating acids like AHAs, can compromise the skin barrier and lead to irritation.
How Long Does It Take For Retinol To Work
Retinol and retinoid results vary by person, however consistency is key. While you may see some immediate benefits when using a new retinoid product, it takes time and consistency. Generally, it can take 8-12 weeks of continued use to see best results.
Is Retinol Safe For Sensitive Skin?
Retinol and retinoids can cause a period of irritation (known as retinisation) but it really depends on the formula and concentration. Most skin types, including sensitive skin, can tolerate retinoids, provided they are introduced slowly, in combination with a gentle, hydrating skincare routine. As the retinoid found in Smart Clinical Repair™ serum is very gentle, it’s ideal for sensitive skin types and doesn’t necessarily require an adjustment period. However, if you have an active flareup of redness or sensitivity, it is best to avoid retinol.
What Our Clinique Derm Says
